Exotic places are always fun to go to, but I really enjoyed visiting Minnesota. In Ely, we saw the International Wolf Reserve, the North American Bear Center, and farther south, the zoos and arboretums, the Gooseberry cabins on Lake Superior at Castle Danger. We’ve taken a paddle wheeler boat ride and watched firefighters training in rescue above the rapids on the St. Croix River. Visiting the quaint little towns, where we have to stop in the St. Croix Chocolate Factory in Marine and the Pine Tree Apple Orchards is always fun. From seeing the wildlife, the flowers, the waterfalls and lighthouse, hiking four to five miles a day, I have the most beautiful memories. A seven-foot, hand-carved Sasquatch towers over visitors on the porch of Northern Lake Tavern and Grill in Chisago City. And White Bear is filled with polar bears. Just the statue kinds.
Another fun destination for me is Omaha, Nebraska. Yep, you heard me. I LOVE the wildlife reserve there—seeing the wolves, owls, eagles, bears, elk, deer, and other wildlife there. The gates for the entrance into the drive-thru to see the elk, deer, and bison looked like you’re entering Jurassic Park. I love it! The arboretum, zoo, and parks are beautiful. Art museums, space museum, train museum also add to the fun.
San Diego is a great place to visit too, and I’d love to return there one of these days. Balboa Park featured arts and crafts, water fountains, flowers, a Japanese garden, and a nature center. Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is a beautiful federal military cemetery overlooking San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. You can see seals and sea lions up close in La Jolla, and the San Diego Zoo is one of the best! I love all the animals, but it’s especially fun for me to see the panda bears since not that many zoos I’ve been able to visit have them. The USS Midway Museum is located there. Torrey Pines State Reserve was great for taking pictures of the ocean and taking a long a hike, capturing pictures of butterflies in the wild, and birds and planes flying overhead. There are so many places we didn’t have a chance to see, but it sure was fun to see all that we did!
So those are three of my favorite vacation trips!
