I was a teen when we moved from Oklahoma farm country to the beautiful city of San Antonio. I must admit, I fell in love immediately. It was difficult to settle on five favorites, but this is what I’ve come up with.
1) I fell in love with the people. San Antonio is a very diverse city and I love the warmth and hospitality. I was invited into my friends’ homes and I learned about different cultures. I thought the Hispanic culture was beautiful. I learned to make Mexican food from my friend’s mothers who took me under their wings.
2) I love the climate, which is generally mild. The city is alive with brilliant colors of flowers that bloom almost year round. Everywhere you turn, there is a lushness that is a feast to the eyes.
3) The San Antonio River ribbons around downtown San Antonio, with a very beautiful area defined as the River Walk, where you can wander along, browse shops and dine in a multitude of restaurants. You can board a barge and take a tour of the river area. There are hotels along the river so you can book a room, take a barge tour, eat in any of the great restaurants, and browse your way along the River Walk.
4) Fiesta San Antonio. 10 days In April are set aside for Fiesta, an event and a lifestyle. It infects the entire city. There are three parades. The Battle of Flowers is a lavish daytime parade, and Fiesta Flambeau is an illuminated night parade. The River Parade has actual floats and people line the banks of the river to watch the gorgeous floats and catch candy and baubles. The party goes on at La Villita, the original Spanish village situated near the Alamo mission. The entire city embraces the Fiesta spirit and there are events scheduled all during the entire 10 days.
5) Brackenridge Park is a beautiful parcel of land in an older part of San Antonio. Within the park you will find many picnic areas where families gather to grill and relax. The park is also home to the San Antonio Zoo, which is the 3rd largest zoo in America. The Brackenridge Eagle is the 1/5 scale train that runs through the park. I’m quite attached to the train as I once wrote a book in which an exciting chase took place via train and golf cart. Another beautiful part of the park is the Japanese Tea Garden. All in all, the park is a place to relax. Meandering through the park and taking in the sights is a guaranteed stress reliever.
